Probably the only reason they still sell the Taurus is because of the Police Interceptor. Wondering when they’ll axe it. It’ll be a shame, because I dig the way it looks.

Do you see how ridiculously tall it is? Seriously, compare it to the people in the picture. The thing is a sedan shaped crossover.
None of which makes it a bad car, it just weirds me out a bit.

If they fixed how awful the interior proportions are people might buy more of them.
The 2006 Five Hundred is a TARDIS compared to the modern Taurus.

Yeah, I think the Fusion has similar interior dimensions. I doubt Ford will remedy that any time soon, unfortunately.

Nah, Ford has a way of somehow making the interior smaller and the exterior bigger.
Just look at the Escape. They turned a perfectly fine box on wheels into what amounts to a sardine tin.

Interceptor days are numbered as well, from what I understand. I have a friend who’s an officer, they all want the explorers instead. Not even ordering the Taurus in at least one major local department

That does make sense.

Ford might as well lift it.

Drove in a rental on the most boring road trip ever. I was really impressed with how solid and quick and quiet it was. it was a 3.5 non boost motor.

They literally made it for old people. Older people like to not move their hips when getting in a car and that was a main design criteria. Where you sit is literally the same height as some SUVs.
... distinguishing feature of the Ford Five Hundred is its tall exterior height; at 61.5 inches tall, it was over 5 inches taller than the Ford Taurus sold alongside it. A key feature driving the use of the tall body design was the upward movement of the H-point (hip point). As with the first-generation Ford Focus , the seats of the Five Hundred were positioned relatively high from the floor, providing an upright seating position and improved visibility, access, and egress.
A Teacher I had in school was in Design & product planning at Ford.

This needs a slight redesign with a larger greenhouse.
It doesn’t look roomy at all for its size.

The Explorer and Taurus Police Interceptors are basically the same price, so departments have been opting for the higher ground clearance and better cargo space of the Explorer.

Likely, they’ll build it for as long as it remains profitable and can be kept in safety and environmental compliance without significant investment.

I’m still bummed that we won’t be getting the new one. It’s Asia only and it’s a damn good looking car.
All new platform and everything

It really is a shame. I know a guy who just bought a Fusion because he loved the way it looked. Even tho the Taurus was a better car. This new Taurus has all the looks the Fusion had a few years ago in an even more handsome full sized package.

I went to a lecture by a designer at Honda who talked about designing interiors to give the illusion of space, and the whole time I couldn’t stop thinking about how accomplished Ford was at doing the opposite.

When I’ve had Focus rental cars I’ve found them surprisingly quiet and comfy for an econobox, but when I’ve ridden in my coworker’s Escape it somehow manages to feel shitty. You’d expect a crossover to at least maintain the comfort level of the car on which it’s based but it rides way worse.

Wrong. Crossovers are produced as quickly as possible with as little money put into them as possible.

If you take a sedan and raise it higher up by adding suspension travel, in theory that extra suspension travel should make it easy to have a smooth ride. Many crossovers are very comfy for this reason. But the Escape isn’t.
